Hari Adivarekar is a self-trained photographer, inspired at a young age by experimenting with his father’s analog manual Minolta camera. He has been an active photographer for the last ten years, with a portfolio that is both wide in range and comprehensive in its depth. His areas of specialization include: Journalistic Reportage, Travel, Landscape, Music, Dance, Abstract, Weddings, and development and corporate projects. Live music photography is his passion and specialty, and Hari has photographed over a 100 concerts with diverse musical legends such as Aerosmith, Beyonce, Iron Maiden, Black Eyed Peas, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Zakir Hussain, and Herbie Hancock, to name a few. Development and journalistic work also form a large portion of Hari’s work, and he has documented issues such as the effects of hydroelectric projects in rural Karnataka and Sikkim, the legalization of Gay marriage in New York, and the work of Karunashreya, a hospice in Bangalore for terminally ill patients. Hari’s publishing credits include publications such as Hindustan Tiimes, Tehelka, Jet Wings International, Sound Box magazine, The Voice (publication of WorldSpace), and RAVE magazine and on assignment for other groups like Greenpeace, The Biocon Foundation, The Kabir Project and Jaanagraha.
In 2011, his multimedia photographic presentation “From Monterey to Malwa,” was exhibited at the Bangalore gallery, One Shanthi Road. A multimedia presentation, it juxtaposed the musicians and ethos of the Kabir Malwa Yatra (a journey of folk musicians in Madhya Pradhesh) with that of the Monterey Jazz festival in California. He has also shown a larger collection of his music photography at the Alliance Francais, Bangalore, in his critically acclaimed exhibit, “Seven Notes.”
Aside from photography, Hari has extensive experience as a writer, editor, content manager, and RJ. While he was working at the satellite radio station, WorldSpace, he hosted two radio shows and also managed and edited content for their website and in-house publication, The Voice, which had a readership of 200,000 subscribers. He also contributed articles and photography for The Voice, as well as RAVE magazine, where he was a writer and editor. His content planning and communication skills extend to other consultancy work, including the Jaago Re Campaign, a project intended to increase voter turnout in India. He just finished a stint producing, programming and jockeying on a satirical live online cricket commentary radio station (www.pitch-invasion.in).
Hari’s passion and dedication to photography is inspired by his philosophy that it is a larger means of communicating for the voiceless, for whom he is a medium.
